Clinker or Render? Facade Comparison — Durability, Cost, Aesthetics
Published 5 May 2025
Choosing a facade is one of the most important decisions when constructing or renovating a building. The two most popular solutions — clinker brick and render — differ significantly in cost, durability and maintenance requirements.
What is a clinker facade?
Clinker is a fired brick or tile characterised by very low water absorption (below 6%), high frost resistance and a natural, premium aesthetic. It is used both as structural facing masonry and as thin tiles bonded to insulation boards.
Clinker vs Render — Key Parameters
| Parameter | Clinker brick | Silicone/acrylic render |
|---|---|---|
| Lifespan | 80–150 years | 20–30 years |
| Maintenance | Virtually none | Repainting every 10–15 years |
| Installation cost | €40–80/m² | €18–35/m² |
| Frost resistance | Very high | Medium |
| Aesthetics | Natural, premium look | Wide colour range |
| Property value | Significantly increases | Neutral |
When to choose clinker?
- Building for the long term (50+ years)
- Minimal maintenance is a priority
- Increasing property value matters
- Location with high temperature fluctuations
When to choose render?
- Lower upfront budget
- Wide colour flexibility needed
- Planning to sell within 10–15 years
How much does a clinker facade cost?
Indicative installation costs (2025):
- Structural clinker masonry: €70–120/m²
- Clinker tiles on insulation: €40–75/m²
Price depends on clinker type, facade complexity and scaffold access.
