Monolithic Construction — What Is It and How Much Does It Cost in 2025?

Published 28 April 2025

Monolithic construction is a method of erecting buildings by pouring concrete directly on site into formwork systems that shape walls and ceilings. It’s favoured for residential blocks, industrial facilities and public buildings due to its exceptional durability and structural rigidity.

How does monolithic construction work?

Concrete is poured on site into formwork that mirrors the target shape of a wall or slab. Once cured, the formwork is stripped and relocated upward — allowing buildings to rise floor by floor at a fast, predictable pace.

Key advantages:

  • No joints — minimal risk of cracks or settlement movement
  • Speed — a typical formwork cycle takes 5–7 working days per floor
  • Design flexibility — non-standard shapes and open floor plans are straightforward
  • Longevity — monolithic structures are designed to last 100+ years

How much does monolithic construction cost?

Costs depend on building volume, design complexity, formwork type and location.

Indicative ranges (2025):

ElementLabour & equipment cost
Monolithic walls€55–85/m²
Slabs€40–65/m²

When to choose monolithic construction?

Ideal for:

  • Multi-storey residential buildings (4+ floors)
  • Buildings with irregular layouts
  • Public and industrial facilities
  • Projects where build speed is critical
